Jetsurfing is one of the most impressive yet demanding extreme water sports, a sport that remains relatively unknown and underrated in Cyprus, despite its high level and international appeal.
Riders compete on motorized surfboards with a built-in gasoline or electric engine, which can reach speeds of 55–60 km/h. The races are held on specially designed tracks with curves and straights, testing the balance, control, endurance, and reflexes of the athletes to the fullest. It is an intense sport, combining elements of surfing, jet skiing, and motocross.
Among the world’s top riders is now Cypriot Mike Michaelides, an athlete who, through perseverance, consistency, and hard work, has managed to reach the top of the world Jetsurf. The world champion speaks to the sports insert of “Alithia”, Supersport, about his journey, his significant successes, but also the big goals he sets for the future.
The Cypriot champion carried out his training at his family’s water sports facility, Seawolf Watersports in Limassol, without hiding his concerns about the preparation conditions on the island:
“I did my training at Seawolf Watersports, but I am not completely satisfied with the help I am being provided. To stand at the top level, you need conditions and support that are constantly evolving,” said one of the world’s top riders in his comment.
2023 was a benchmark for his career, as he ranked third in the European overall rankings, a result that gave him additional confidence and motivation for the future: “It was the year when I felt that I could really stand up to the top players in Europe,” he told our newspaper.
A year later, Michaelides confirmed his stability at the global level, showing that his presence in the elite of the sport was not accidental. In 2025, he was accompanied by successive appearances on the podium: 2nd place in Turkey, 3rd place in Italy, 2nd place in Croatia, culminating in the grand final in Macau, where everything was decided.
“The race in Macau was incredible, with tremendous pressure until the end. The key to the victory – and ultimately the championship – was stability, a clear mind and keeping my pace without mistakes at crucial moments.”
With the world title now in his possession, Mike Michaelides’ goals remain clear and ambitious: “I want to continue to raise the level and defend my title with even stronger performances. Jetsurf does not forgive mistakes and this pushes me to become better every year.”
Mike Michaelides is not just a successful rider. He is now a benchmark for Jetsurfing in Cyprus and a living proof that even in sports with limited visibility and support, perseverance and talent can lead to the world’s top. With European and global distinctions, but also clear ambition for the future, he continues to lead the sport to new levels, worthily representing Cyprus on the international stage.
